why

Kathryn writes potentially nonfiction. Her characters might exist. Her plots might also. Previous things are easier to observe when pretending they happened to someone else. Another’s hopes disappointed are easier to bear than one’s own.

Sometimes she is afraid the stories will creep into the world that Lives, and she will have to decide how they end. She will have to decide with breath and blood instead of little black marks that scuttle across the page. Marks, like insects, are easier to direct and easier to kill when they won’t behave. She writes what was or what might be and wonders.
