The Disappearance Of The Goat In The Tree

The goat was gone.
It’s tether rope was broken. It had hung like a zipline from the stake in the yard to the tree where the goat sat. The frayed end still clung to the stake, but the goat and the rope were missing. The children looked at the stake and not at each other. They thought the same thought and didn’t say a word. August reached for her brothers hand and he blinked very fast. It was his goat. God bless him for not blaming her. Somewhere in the sky behind the smoke, thunder growled.

“It won’t rain.” he said.
