The Birthday Present

The stone was left to Godrick in his mother’s will. It had belonged to his father, who died before his birth. His mother promised it to him as a consolation prize. On the edge of destitution, he tipped over the edge of the bottle, living the rest of his life in a haze. At the twenty-first birthday party of his elder brother’s grandson, he discovered the stone in his pocket, and on a drunken whim, gave it to the boy as a present.
