The Return

“July!” She is out of breath. It’s nearly noon and she’s been missing since dawn. He’s on the verge of panic.

“Where’ve you been?” He grabs her wrist, fear disguised as anger. “We’ve been worried like hell! You can’t run off like that!” She doubles over, gasping. He shakes her, “Talk! Where’d you go?”

“Can’t… ran… whole way… mountain…” She says to the dirt. Electricity shoots down his spine. The mountain. Trembling, he embraces her. Too tightly. “You idiot little girl! Why would you…? You could’ve—” His voice cracks.

“July” her eyes are shining. “July, It spoke. It wants a name.”
